Design is > Than Meets the Eye

While visual images are not always necessary for a great design, the quality of thinking and creativity that go into any work will always matter. Whether it’s images, words, sounds, or interactions, bringing together the right elements in the right combinations to achieve a goal is the essence of great design.

Helping people understand and gain meaningful insights from complex topics and data is my passion. I specialize in human-centered design strategies for data-intensive applications and visualizations. Areas of interest include health, the life sciences, and cybersecurity. I’m also a published book author, chapter contributor, journalist, and instructor.

Two Upcoming classes for Fall 2018

Learn the Essentials of Data Visualization

You’ll examine case studies, be given hands-on training with data visualization tools, and work on your own projects creating and evaluating human-centered visualizations. These projects can be done with various formats and tools of the students’ choice but are subject to instructor approval. The students will learn about important contributors to the field, as well as the essentials of visual design, information design, and human/computer interaction that are relevant to data visualization.
